From ancient Roman settlements to Gothic architecture: The first stage of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail impresses with art and culture that invite you to marvel.

Along the stage from Krems to Mautern, numerous cultural highlights are waiting to be discovered. Even the hike's starting point in the middle of Krems' old town is a real eye-catcher. An ensemble combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture gives the city a unique ambience. The colourful Kunstmeile Krems and the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich round off the overall artistic concept. The route finally leads to Mautern via the listed steel truss bridge. The city impresses with its exceptionally well-preserved buildings of the Roman fort of Faviani and its ancient history. You can also admire exciting finds from forgotten times in the Roman Museum. Due to the short distance and easy difficulty, the first stage of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail is also suitable for all culture lovers.

Popis trasy Kremstal-Danube Long Distance Trail 01: Krems - Mautern

The route starts in the centre of Krems at the Hoher Markt and heads West, past the high medieval town castle of the "Gozzoburg" and the parish church of St. Veit, also known as the "Cathedral of the Wachau". We go down to the lift into  Obere Landstraße and right towards Steiner Tor. We leave the pedestrian zone at Steinertor, a part of the former city wall and today's landmark of Krems. We walk along the city park via Schiller- and Und-Straße past the monastery AND the former Capuchin monastery, to the Kunstmeile Krems and the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, the architectonic cube, whichopened in 2019. At the end of the Steiner Landstraße, we reach the Donaulände. Over the listed, steel half-timbered bridge, the "Mauterner Brücke", you reach the Roman town of Mautern on the southern bank of the Danube, where the stage ends at Mautern town hall.

From Vienna via the A22 and the S5 to Krems.

From the A1 Westautobahn from St. Pölten via the S33 to Krems.

From the A1 Westautobahn to Melk and on the B3 to Krems (through the Wachau).

Parking can be found in the parking garages of Krems city centre. Please note the paid short-term parking system with zones in the city centres of Krems and Stein. You can find more information on the homepage of the city of Krems www.krems.gv.at

From Vienna (Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof) to Krems: Travel time: approx. 1 hour

From St. Pölten (Westbahn) to Krems: Travel time: approx. 30-45 minutes

From Linz: Westbahn to St. Pölten, continue by regional train to Krems

Mautern an der Donau - the gateway to the Wachau - offers a spectacular view of the excellently preserved buildings of the Roman fort FAVIANIS. The Mautern Roman Museum in the baroque Schüttkasten in Mautern displays many finds that bear witness to the prolonged presence of the Romans.
