Brunn am Gebirge
The market town of Brunn am Gebirge in the district of Mödling looks back on a long history. There is evidence that the area was settled as early as 6,000 BC - which is why Brunn is now considered the oldest farming settlement in the whole of Austria. Today's village center is said to have been built around the year 1,000. The name Prunni, which is derived from "well", was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century.
Today, the municipality is known for its beer brewing tradition and its vineyards in the Vienna Woods - and above all for its thriving industry: numerous companies have settled in the industrial area and Campus 21. Away from the daily grind and into leisure time: a wide variety of sports and activities await residents and visitors in Brunn am Gebirge. There is a great outdoor children's pool for younger guests, while walkers love the Lerchenhöhe area. There are also several hiking and mountain bike tours. The campus ponds offer lovely opportunities to stroll and linger by the water. The educational wine trail can be discovered on foot or by bike - and has interesting information on the subject of wine. One of the most beautiful 18-hole courses in the country is located at the Brunn Golf & Country Club.
Important sights in Brunn am Gebirge
There are many historical features to discover in Brunn: The world-famous founder of anthroposophy and Waldorf education, Rudolf Steiner, lived in the "Gliedererhof", for example - before he went to Weimar to publish Goethe's natural science writings. The "Annenhof" dates back to the 17th century, while the core of the old town hall dates back to the 16th century. Also historically significant are ten Art Nouveau terraced houses in the style of the Viennese Secession - built in 1902 by architect Josef "Sepp" Hubatsch. Finally, the impressively fairytale-like Brunner parish church features elements of Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Modernism.
