Ringelsdorf-Niederabsdorf

Ringelsdorf is located slightly away from the Marchauen on the Zaya. On the other side of the main road, the village still has atmospheric village scenes from the 11th century - a Bavarian settlement of Bavarian colonists. The Zaya was once feared for its floods, but today it has been tamed, with only partially dilapidated mills remaining to bear witness to its wild course. Ringelsdorf is home to the largest contiguous meadow area in Europe. The beautiful "Great Meadows" are a prime example of a March meadow: Mugeln and Sutten allow for the coexistence of wet reed zones, damp meadows of pennywort and alternating wet meadows of burnet. The pollarded willows, which serve as boundary markers, are truncated in the traditional way. The thick heads are nesting sites for greylag geese. This landscape is home to lapwings, redshanks and marsh harriers. In spring, the chorus of fire-bellied toads and tree frogs can be heard. If you walk north along the dam, you will eventually reach the Hohenau-Ringelsdorf bird station. The ornithologists there can be seen ringing birds or will be happy to take you on exciting excursions.
