The 46.5 km circular route through the Traisen valley leads east of the Traisen on secondary roads and well-maintained farm roads through slightly hilly fields and meadows. In about 3 hours, the places around the center of Lower Austria can be comfortably cycled with a low elevation gain of 460 meters.
It is advisable to travel the round with an e-bike, mountain bike, or trekking bike, as some sections are on gravel roads and small secondary roads with occasional small climbs.
Those who like to start early can stay overnight in Herzogenburg (Cleverhotel) and set off early. If arriving by car or train, it is best to start at the parking lot of Stift Herzogenburg, from here follow a section of the green-signed "Weinbergweg" eastwards to the Traisen. Here is the entry to the Mittelpunkt bike route, which is signposted in both directions.
Of course, the route can be joined at any other point as well.

At the starting point in Herzogenburg, from April to October, a visit to Stift Herzogenburg offers an interesting insight into the life of the Augustinian canons. Then it continues north along the Traisen to St. André, where a detour to the former St. André Abbey Church, a remarkable Baroque jewel with Paul Troger frescoes, is worthwhile. The next remarkable church is in Heiligenkreuz Gutenbrunn. Next to the late Baroque castle, the richly furnished Parish and Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1755. The altarpiece and frescoes are by Maulpertsch. In summer, matinees with well-known artists are held on Sundays in the castle. Visits by prior appointment.
From Stift Herzogenburg, follow a section of the green-signed "Weinbergweg" heading east; at the Traisen, there is the connection to the Mittelpunkt bike route.
The route continues through fields on the small Baroque road to Juchezbaum, where a connecting bike path branches off to the Tullnerfeld bike path. The Mittelpunkt bike route continues along the Panorama Path past Seelackenberg to Atzenbrugg. Just before Atzenbrugg, there is an opportunity to visit a tree educational trail on a detour northwards.
In Atzenbrugg, a visit to the castle and museum is definitely worthwhile. The museum "Franz Schubert and his circle of friends", founded in 1986, is located in the main wing of the Atzenbrugg Castle, whose diverse building history can be traced back to the beginning of the 12th century and houses several art-historical treasures. During the summer months, Schubertiades are held in the Schubert Hall of the castle.
An interesting stop is the Langer Mill in Atzenbrugg, the only still operating grain mill in the Tullnerfeld. The mill is about 700 years old and is run by the Langer family in the 4th generation. The flour is still produced traditionally in the existing mill. Since December 2021, the Langer Mill along with some other traditional mills has been recognized by UNESCO as "intangible cultural heritage." In the mill shop "la müh la," artisanal foods and specialties with solid quality, strength, and aura from Austria are offered. Baking courses are also available.
From the easternmost point of the route, you continue to Würmla. Those who still have enough energy can cycle a round around Würmla's Walls, remarkable urban art on rural facades. In total, 13 old barns, cellars, and silos in ten communities of the municipality were designed by art director Katharina Herzog and artist David Leithner. Those who stay on the Mittelpunkt bike route can admire some of the walls while passing by.
The late Baroque long church St. Ulrich and many charming chapels characterize the entire village. The representative Würmla Castle from 1894 now houses the municipal office.
Six kilometers after Würmla you reach Thalheim.
Nestled among Baroque rose gardens, the magnificent Thalheim Castle presents itself as a place full of peace, quiet, and calm. Besides the formerly residential main building, the complex includes several side wings and its own castle chapel from the High Baroque by Jakob Prandtauer. Enjoy afternoon coffee on the castle terrace. Thalheim Classic offers an extensive cultural program in the castle.
After Thalheim, the route reaches the Perschling and the Perschling Valley bike route. This runs parallel to the Mittelpunkt bike route along the river north to Kapelln (and then further to the Danube). Shortly before Kapelln, the connecting path to Pottenbrunn branches off. This leads via Maria Jeutendorf (pilgrimage church) to Pottenbrunn and further to the Traisental bike route.
Kapelln on the Perschling lies exactly at the center of Lower Austria. The Max Schubert lookout marks the middle of Lower Austria. On weekends and public holidays, a snack stand directly at the lookout invites you for food and drinks in the afternoon. For a big appetite, the Gasthaus Nährer in Rassing, only 1 kilometer away, is recommended.
Also worth seeing are the branch church in Katzenberg and the parish church of St. Petronilla in Kapelln. Several romantic wine cellar lanes and pretty wayside chapels shape the landscape. The Andreas Peace Lookout, to which a short detour is worthwhile, offers the best pre-Alpine panoramic views.
Shortly after Kapelln, the Mittelpunkt bike route separates from the Perschling Valley bike route and leads the last kilometers via Ossarn back to the starting point of the route in Herzogenburg.
