Excursion and vacation by the water: the statutory town of Krems an der Donau looks back on over 1,000 years of history - and as a center of education and culture, it also shapes the modern age. The beautiful old town of Krems is part of the Wachau Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site: with picturesque alleyways, a cobbled pedestrian zone and architectural landmarks such as the Steiner Tor - the only surviving town gate and landmark of Krems. Upscale gastronomy and cozy wine taverns invite you to take a wonderfully relaxing break.
Krems' close connection to viticulture is reflected in the landscape as well as in its customs and festivals. The Danube port and Krems airport are also very important. The municipal area comprises a total of 12 villages - including Krems, Stein, Egelsee, Gneixendorf, Rehberg and Lerchenfeld.
Exciting history(ies) of Krems an der Donau
There is evidence that the area was settled early on: A 27,000-year-old child's grave from the Iron Age - with two infants covered by a mammoth shoulder blade and grave goods - is considered the oldest known burial site in the entire country. Another sensational find was unearthed near Krems-Rehberg: The 32,000-year-old statuette of a woman is now known as "Fanny vom Galgenberg" and is the oldest work of art in Austria. The Slavs settled here from the 7th century. Krems was first mentioned in a document in 995.
Krems: art & culture in all its facets
In addition to a high-quality educational landscape consisting of several important colleges and universities, Krems offers above all a wide range of art and culture: the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich is the center of the Krems Art Mile, which stretches from Minoritenplatz in Krems-Stein across Museumsplatz to the historic Dominican Church with its exhibition venues Forum Frohner, Kunsthalle Krems and Karikaturmuseum as well as the Klangraum Krems Minoritenkirche .
Also worth seeing are the Gozzoburg - one of the most important medieval inner-city buildings in the whole of Austria - and the Sandgrube 13 wine experience world. In addition, internationally renowned festivals such as the Danube Festival, Glatt und Verkehrt, the open-air cinema at the Kesselhaus and many more take place in Krems throughout the year.
