The lovingly furnished monastery store is the place to go for visitors to Herzogenburg Abbey. The range includes books and devotional items, as well as wines from the region. Fruit juices, coffee and snacks round off the offer. Guided tours of the abbey begin here and staff are available to answer your questions.
Witness to eternity
The "Witness to Eternity" exhibition at Herzogenburg Abbey is open from April to the end of October. There are guided tours of the abbey every day except Wednesday at 11.00 am, 2.00 pm and 3.30 pm. You will gain an insight into the history and life of the community of Augustinian canons: Prelate's Staircase, banqueting hall, collections, choir chapel, treasury and library.
A complete work of art
Over 900 years of monastery history are reflected in the historic Herzogenburg Abbey. Its new baroque building was constructed from 1714 by the famous master builders Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast. The magnificent monastery complex, which has now been extensively revitalized, is the focal point of life for the Augustinian canons. The Lower Austrian Children's Summer Games (NÖKISS) are also traditionally held here every year. The large art collection also houses valuable exhibits from the Gothic period to the present day. The banqueting hall, treasury, library and coin cabinet as well as the baroque picture room underline the great art-historical significance of the abbey.
Spiritual center on the Way of St. James
The heart of Herzogenburg Abbey is the collegiate church, founded around 1014. It is considered the most important building of the Austrian late Baroque period - and is home to a magnificent organ by Johann Hencke. Next to it is the Easter Chapel for private prayer. The abbey is surrounded by numerous gardens, such as the prelate's garden with its fountain and the blooming rose garden.
Incidentally, the monastery is particularly popular with visitors on foot - after all, it is located directly on the Way of St. James (Purkersdorf-Göttweig section). That is why it has become a popular pilgrimage site.
