Popis
This idyllic hiking route offers a varied walk to the Danube through different landscapes. Extensive floodplain meadows bear witness to the former hunting significance of the floodplain around the former imperial hunting lodge Eckartsau.
The path also leads through the Eckartsau Castle Park, which was laid out as a generous landscape park around the castle about a hundred years ago and today unfolds its full charm once again. Treat yourself to a break in the hammocks, deck chairs or tree nests and listen to the birds chirping.

Popis trasy Hiking in the National Park: ECKARTSAUER DONAURUNDE
Arrival by public transport to Eckartsau: Starting from the town centre (market square), we cross a bridge (statue of St. Nepomuk) and enter the castle park (national park gate), which was laid out in the style of an English landscape garden. We cross the Fadenbach on a stone bridge and reach Maria Theresien Allee towards the Danube. This hardwood floodplain is especially beautiful in spring (sea of flowers with snowdrops, yellow star, yellow windflower). After approx. 500 metres, we reach the flood protection dam and follow Maria Theresien Allee into the floodplain.
At the end of the avenue, there is a view opening onto a large meadow. The meadows at Eckartsau are partly centuries old and were used for court hunts. These meadows are repeatedly interspersed with old oaks and are very scenic.
We cross the adjoining old water on a short stone dam (traverse). Perhaps we see turtles sunbathing on the tree trunks lying in the water.
At the crossroads, we follow the marking to the right. We now walk through short wooded areas and across large meadows (orchid bloom in May, autumn crocus in autumn).
The next marking shows the way to the Danube, but it is also possible to shorten the route straight ahead via a meadow path.
Arriving at the Danube, we walk along the stepped path upstream to sharply turn right at the next marking (rest area). The path leads over a large meadow and through tall-stemmed floodplain forest back to the flood protection dam. After crossing the dam, a wooded area and a large pasture for cattle grazing (grazing project) follow. At the bridge over the Fadenbach, we leave the floodplain through the national park gate. At the sports ground, turn right to return to the castle park.
