Historical review
In 995, Ulmerfeld comes into the possession of the HOCHSTIFT FREISING in Bavaria by way of exchange.
King Otto III gives Bishop Gottschalk 200 hectares in "Zudamaresfelt" for a vineyard near Krems.
The castle was built in 1321 under Bishop Konrad III.
The castle housed the bishop's chambers as well as the residence of the caretaker and the castle governor in the so-called Palas.
The frescoes in the portico date from the early 17th century.
The castle has been a listed building since 1965.
In 1975, the municipality of Amstetten bought the castle from Neusiedler-Papier-AG, now Mondi Business Paper.
Restoration work began in 1985.
In 1993, Ulmerfeld Castle was restored to its former glory and since then life has returned to the walls.
During the summer months, concerts, theater performances and film festivals take place in the romantic arcaded courtyard, which boasts excellent acoustics.
Fine art has found its home on the 1st and 2nd floors of the castle.
In the castle tower, you can see the historical collection of weapons created in his workshop over the course of 35 years by the famous Amstetten weapons master Ernst Urschitz.
On display are over 400 different weapons, starting with the weapons of the Celts and the Hallstatt culture up to those of the early 19th century. The aim of the collection is not to glorify war, but to provide all visitors with knowledge about the craftsmanship and artistic skills of our ancestors
