Lainsitzniederung in Gmünd
Přírodní zážitek
Popis
Since 2018, water buffaloes have been tending to the wet meadows of the Lainsitzniederung in Gmünd, Austria's largest near-natural meander section in Lower Austria. The nature reserve between Gmünd and the Czech border boasts species-rich willow meadows, floodplains and diverse wildlife. It is home to rare bird species such as the highly endangered corncrake, 29 dragonfly species, including the green damselfly, and numerous butterflies such as the meadow blue.
The Lainsitz meanders through the floodplain landscape, which is regularly flooded by natural high water, creating ideal habitats for flora and fauna. Otters are also increasingly found in the region, thanks to its proximity to the Czech population. To protect nature, access is only permitted on marked paths.
The water buffalo have been keeping the grass and wild growth in check since 2018, a unique grazing project in Austrian nature reserves. The impressive animals can be observed from the viewing platforms on the Lainsitz from May to October.
Just a few minutes away from Gmünd is the Blockheide Nature Park with the famous Wackelsteine, a perfect excursion destination for nature lovers and families. Discover the Lainsitzniederung: water buffalo, a variety of birds and untouched floodplain landscapes await!
