Popis
The Markgrafneusiedl ruins are a historically significant eye-catcher. The picturesque landmark of the municipality of Markgrafneusiedl is located at the highest point in the Marchfeld - on the foothills of the Kleiner Wagram. Today's ruins were built between 1220 and 1240 as a church fortification. As part of the defensive ring of the Ostmark, the fortified church was dedicated to St. Martin.
After several changes of ownership, the former fortified building underwent an extensive general renovation in 1988. In the 1990s, local archaeologists discovered the so-called "astronomical window" in the ruins: This concentrates the sunlight as a specific point on the opposite inner wall every winter solstice.
