Ruine Wolfstein

Zřícenina

Popis

1268 is mentioned as the alleged year of construction of the castle, but the first documented owner of the castle is a certain Perchtold von Wolfstein in 1217, which suggests an even earlier date of construction. As forgotten as the ruins of Wolfstein Castle are today, its role in the Middle Ages was not insignificant. By the 15th century, Wolfstein had become a lordship in its own right and the seat of the district court for almost the entire district above the Vienna Woods, surpassing even the neighbouring administrative center of Aggstein, but had to cede this "dignity" to Markersdorf an der Pielach very early on. When Wolfstein Castle became the property of Göttweig Abbey, it began its centuries-long decline. In the lonely ruin in the forest, which was known only to a few, only the chapel and its saint survived the times.

The castle chapel, which is still preserved today and is also the subject of the legend of Wolfstein, appears in documents in 1392. Wolfstein belonged to Göttweig Abbey from 1620 and remained so until 1993, when an enthusiastic castle lover bought the dilapidated ruin and began to rebuild it. He and his wife are still working on it today.
