Popis
The oldest, as well as the most important monument, the former castle and fortress is a creation of the Middle Ages. History records that Rudolf and Rozinus von Maissau (Missov or Mihsouw) were mentioned in 1122. The Lords of Maissau were a powerful ministerial family. This family became extinct with the death of Otto von Maissau in 1440, who is buried with his wife in the Karthause at Aggsbach. One of the most famous of this dynasty was Otto I and his son Stephan, who held the dignity of the highest hereditary prince in Austria and who always distinguished themselves through loyalty to their sovereign and particular bravery. It is not possible to list the possessions of the lords of Maissau in this small space, but they stretched from the Wachau to Pöggstall, Zwettl and down into the Weinland.
Georg von Eckartsau died without a male heir (around 1500). His daughter Agnes married Otto von Zelking. Their daughter Magdalena inherited the lordship of Maissau in 1526 and married Sebastian Lord of Traun. The son from this marriage, Adam, then received the Maissau estate as his mother's inheritance in 1537. In 1653, the family was raised to the rank of imperial counts.
This means that the Counts of Abensperg and Traun have owned the castle and the Maissau estate without interruption since 1526.
Note: Please note that the castle is privately owned and cannot be visited. We ask for your understanding.
