Ottenschlag Castle

The complex, which was built in a horseshoe shape around a spacious courtyard in place of a medieval castle, is the landmark of Ottenschlag. Built in the 16th century, the castle is known for its 3 striking round towers and the magnificently decorated Renaissance portal.

Before the province of Lower Austria acquired this castle from Göttweig Abbey in 1986 and renovated it in exemplary fashion, it was owned by important noble families for centuries.

History of the castle

The first documented mention of the place is said to date back to 1096. The first owner of the Ottenschlag estate was probably a certain "OTTO" from the Maissauer family, a ministerial of Margrave Leopold II. The Maissauers can be traced as lords of Ottenschlag, with a few interruptions, until they died out.

In 1441, "Georg Scheck vom Wald" from the Kuenringer family, who as the owner of Aggstein had a dubious reputation as a robber baron, acquired Ottenschlag.

In 1479, Caspar von Rogendorf, whose dynasty also owned Pöggstall Castle - known for its still-preserved torture chamber - appears in the eventful succession of rulers. The castle was also extended during this period.

In 1523, Wolfgang von Rog(g)endorf began to erect the present-day castle building around the early medieval stronghold. The castle itself was torn down in the 18th century due to dilapidation and the moat was filled in with the rubble.

The lordship of Ottenschlag became important under the "Barons of Pollheim" during the peasant uprising of 1596/97 and as a center of Lower Austrian Protestantism in the 16th and 17th centuries.

After several changes of ownership - including the lords of the manor "Herberstein" and "Falkenhayn" - Göttweig Abbey acquired this extensive forest estate and the castle in 1931. The building served as accommodation for the gendarmerie, district court, forestry administration, post office, notary's office and several tenants. After being acquired by the state of Lower Austria, it was put to its current use.

A special experience for couples is possible at Ottenschlag Castle. Weddings and anniversaries can be celebrated within the venerable old walls of the Ottenschlag landmark.

At the end of November and beginning of December, the Advent market in the castle also invites you to visit. In the castle courtyard you will find traditional Advent stalls with mulled wine and regional delicacies. The Advent market is framed by a Perchten run and concerts by various choirs, such as the choir of the Ottenschlag music school, which spread the magic of Advent.
