Popis

Maria Anzbach is a pilgrimage site with a long history and impressive landscape. The first settlement dates back to the Bronze Age, and the place was first mentioned in documents in 998. At the renovated marketplace in the center of Maria Anzbach are the guesthouse "Zum Goldenen Löwen", in operation since 1779, the old schoolhouse, and the Goldammer Museum. The artist has had many exhibitions at home and abroad. The highlight is the pilgrimage church "Maria Anzbach Zur Mutter der Barmherzigkeit". The first church was built in 1456. During the Turkish wars, the church was connected via an underground passage to the old smithy. To the north of the municipality lies the Buchberg, from where you can enjoy a fabulous view from the Ötscher to the Waldviertel at the Buchbergwarte, rebuilt in 2004. The observation tower also houses many historical photos and some interactive display boards. The ascent to this 469 m high Vienna Woods peak is not too difficult. When hiking on the Buchberg, you spend most of the time in a natural forest dominated by the European beech. Brown coal deposits were once present here but have already been mined. Geologically, the mountain consists of the so-called Buchberger conglomerate – limestone and flysch pebbles from the Limestone Alps. An outcrop near Burgstall shows this. In places, the path leads over extensive pastures of the cattle and horse farms of the region. At the Eichberg, the second peak of the hike, you will find 21 Roman-era burial mounds, the largest ancient necropolis in Lower Austria.

Popis trasy Buchberg Eichberg round Maria Anzbach

The route begins at the marketplace in the center of Maria Anzbach. Here you find the guesthouse "Zum Goldenen Löwen", the Goldammer Museum, and the pilgrimage church. A detour to the nearby Schönbeckmühle via Schmiedgasse is worthwhile. Walk down the main street heading west and then turn into Sportplatzpromenade. At the sports field, turn right and continue above the field to Eichengasse. At the end of the buildings, the red-marked path branches off to the right; follow it uphill. You reach Birkengasse, where you turn left following the markings. Then proceed along a field path into Tulpengasse, at the end of which turn left into Heitzingerstraße. After a few meters, turn right onto Johannesbergstraße. Shortly after, follow the marking to the right and cross the forest north of the Gschwendthof. Now continue uphill to Burgstall. Here the red marking ends; then follow the blue one on a small asphalt road to the summit of Buchberg. From the Buchbergwarte, you can enjoy a fantastic view from the Ötscher to the Weinviertel. The observation tower houses many historic photos and some interactive display boards. Next to it is the shelter house on the Buchberg. After resting here, descend and turn left from the road into the forest onto the marked WIR circular hiking trail. Keep left here and eventually reach Burgstall again via Hartwichgasse. At the crossroads, turn left, pass the village sign Oed, and then turn right, following the blue marking towards Rekawinkel. On the country road, pass Hofstetten and head to Eichberg. Approximately 1.7 km along the road, there is a right curve, here go straight into the forest. You pass the summit of Eichberg and come across Roman-era burial mounds. Shortly after, the path leads into the settlement of Erlaa. Turn right and follow the green marking on the country road. At the second junction, turn right, then pass the settlements of Hof and Groß-Raßberg. Enter Maria Anzbach and turn left at the first street intersection. Just after crossing the Anzbach, continue right on the footpath. This leads past the pilgrimage chapel to the main street. Here, no longer follow the green marking but turn right, passing the Pestmarterl and the restaurant Hubauer, back to the marketplace.
