Popis trasy Hundsheimer Berge Route: Large Round
Hainburg - Wolfsthal - Berg – Edelstal - Prellenkirchen – Petronell-Carnuntum - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg - Hainburg
The starting point of the route is the medieval town of Hainburg an der Donau. From the Hainburg ship dock, you cycle towards Wolfsthal along the slopes of the Braunsberg. Upon arriving in Wolfsthal, you can visit the pilgrimage church "Maria am Birnbaum." It is dedicated to Saint James and forms the starting point of the Roman Carnuntum Pilgrimage Way, which leads from Wolfsthal to Vienna. Shortly before the border crossing to Slovakia, the path turns towards Berg.
In Berg is the glass Three-Country Fountain, symbolizing a united Europe and a new beginning for the community of peoples. Along Austria's easternmost elevation with the Königswarte as a viewpoint, just after Berg there is a well-deserved break at the "Königswarte" cycling rest stop with a view of the surrounding wind turbines.
The route continues via a detour to the Burgenland village of Edelstal—directly into the romantic wine cellar lane of Prellenkirchen, with its small wine museum. The stone vaulted cellars from the 18th and 19th centuries were built into the fertile loess soil of the Spitzerberg. At least one wine tavern is open here throughout the year. Enjoy a glass of the region-typical Spitzerberger Blaufränkisch. Then continue to Prellenkirchen with the cycling rest stop "Beim Gmoabrunn" right in the center. From Prellenkirchen, the field-lined path leads to Petronell-Carnuntum. Here a visit to the Roman town of Carnuntum is recommended, where a part of a Roman neighborhood has been uniquely rebuilt on the original site worldwide.
You now cycle through Austria's largest archaeological landscape to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, where the Romans already valued the healing power of Austria's strongest iodine-sulfur spring. A detour to the beautiful spa park or the Carnuntinum Museum, the treasure house of Carnuntum, is worthwhile!
Along the Danube, the route leads back to the starting point, the medieval town of Hainburg an der Donau.
