Water fun and hiking in the Ottenstein reservoir recreation area
The 4.5 km² reservoir, which was created in the 1950s, has become a popular recreational area in the Waldviertel region thanks to its wide range of leisure and sports facilities.
The upper and largest of the three Kamp reservoirs impresses with its unique scenic beauty and offers many popular leisure activities. Its fjord-like, branching lake arms are reminiscent of an atypical Scandinavian landscape and give the area around the Ottenstein reservoir its special charm.
Sports and leisure facilities
The wooded shores of the Ottenstein reservoir are ideal for hiking and walking. Numerous cycling, hiking and riding trails lead along the lake and invite you to explore the landscape. If you prefer a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the lake, you are sure to find a nice spot to relax and swim in one of the numerous bays and sunbathing areas.
Many secluded spots that are difficult to reach from the shore can be discovered wonderfully by boat. You can hire electric boats, pedal boats or rowing boats from the boat hire shop at the Ottenstein lakeside restaurant. If you don't want to steer a boat yourself, you can take part in a 30-minute lake tour instead.
Apart from swimming, other water sports are also becoming increasingly popular at the reservoir: Boats2Sail offers a wide range of courses for beginners and advanced sailors and the necessary surfing and sailing equipment can also be hired there.
The Ottenstein reservoir is also well known for its abundance of fish: pike, carp, perch, zander, tench and trout can be found in the water. Fishing licenses are available from the Ottenstein forestry office on (T) +43 2988 6530 and from the Niedernondorf estate and forestry operation on (T) +43 2826 7578.
